Project 2 : Ian & Leila

Brief
Ian and Leila asked us to redesign their small urban courtyard garden space. This space needs to work hard. It is their only garden space as well as a thoroughfare and main access to their property. Ian and Leila wanted to create a space to sit, to move through, to store in and to create some screening from some very tall surrounding buildings. The styling needed to be clean and contemporary yet timeless to fit in with the Victorian property and the local vernacular.
Design solution
The design provides access to the house, secluded seating and entertaining space and screening with the use of simple yet beautiful materials - pleached Hornbeam hedge, the ancient Olive tree and cedar trellis screens. We put Ian and Leila in touch with master crafts people to realise the design as well as restore existing features within the garden. and we project managed the process from start to finish.
“We engaged the team at Bristol Garden Company to transform our tiny city garden. The space is not a traditional shape and was not working for us at all and so was very underused.
From our very first meeting Maddy was so easy to deal with and so helpful, knowledgeable and professional. She was able to guide my husband and I (who are beyond hopeless gardeners) through the entire design process including the selection of plants that were hardy enough to survive our neglect and yet still create the look we wanted.
Our job involved huge amounts of hard landscaping. Maddy recommended landscapers, electricians and stonemasons. We realised it was going to be a huge project and so we employed Maddy to project manage the whole renovation for us and liaise with all the different trades, which she did seamlessly and smoothed out any bumps we met in the road.
We are so thrilled with the results and have had so many compliments from both those who knew the garden before it’s transformation and from those who are seeing it for the first time. We now use the garden more than we ever have and have been so grateful for it particularly during each lockdown.
Garth and his team have provided ongoing maintenance for us and are a pleasure to deal with and are so professional, enthusiastic and tidy in their work.
